I was having a very normal day when my arm brushed against my right breast .. “Oh what’s that?” I thought. I had another feel and felt a rush of panic to my head.
I sat down on the settee. It's every woman’s nightmare.
I sat for about 10 minutes just feeling with the panic getting worse! I immediately made a doctor's appointment for the next again week. "Probably hormonal due to your age" I was told, however I was referred straight away and got an appointment at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh for the next again week.
I went along to the appointment myself as I was feeling brave and confident that it was just a hormonal lump. I was sat with all the other women who had just recently found a lump. The Consultant sent me for a Mammogram, then another mammogram, then biopsies, and then I was free to go home.
I was shocked at what I had just gone through . . . alone. I was the only person who didn’t take a friend for support. I was confused but still optimistic.
Eventually after a few weeks of more tests and visits it was confirmed that I had Grade 1 Cancer which had spread all over the Breast. I was diagnosed on 3rd February 2012 – a date I think I shall remember for a long time.
I think telling my beautiful daughters, Emma and Kate, ages 12 and 9, was the hardest part. They were frightened.
In fact that next week Emma and her friend Jenny did a sponsored silence and raised £1,500 for Breast Cancer Care ! Amazing!
It was at that time that I decided to throw myself into fundraising and raise £30k + for Breast Cancer Care Scotland.
I decided to do two "Calendar Girls" style calendars – one male (Naked Aspiration) and one female (Naked Inspiration). So far I have managed to raise full sponsorship, have enough friends to get their kit off and am on my way to raising £20k of the donation by selling 2000 calendars at £10 each! It has been an amazing journey so far and I have met so many amazing people willing to support my project.
Photo shoots are still on going and the launch of the 2013 calendars will be at Mummy’s Ball on 12th May 2012 at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange hosted by Grant Stott (Forth One). Tables are still available at nakedinspiration@gmail.com if you are interested in a table of 10.
